Richard Bankowitz, MD MS MBA FACP

Chief Medical Officer @ America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP)

Dr. Richard A. Bankowitz is the Chief Medical Officer of America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP).  In this role, he works closely with the clinical leaders of AHIP’s member plans to promote high-value health care for consumers.

A board-certified internist and medical informaticist, Dr. Bankowitz has devoted his career to improving healthcare quality at the national level by promoting rigorous, data-driven approaches to quality improvement and by engaging senior clinicians and healthcare leaders.

He was named by Modern Healthcare as one of the top 25 clinical informaticists in the US for three consecutive years: 2010 – 2012, and as one of the top 50 physician executives in 2012 and 2013.

Dr. Bankowitz joined AHIP from Premier, Inc., where he served as chief medical officer, working at an enterprise level to engage physicians, provide thought leadership, and ensure that Premier continued to deliver value to its clinician constituency. Earlier, he served as vice president and medical director for Premier Healthcare Informatics.

Previously, he was medical director at CareScience, a health care improvement company, where he was responsible for strategy, product delivery, consulting, sales and advocacy efforts.

Prior to that, Dr. Bankowitz served as the corporate information architect of the University HealthSystem Consortium (now Vizient), where he was responsible for the strategic direction of the organization’s executive reporting tools and comparative data.

He began his career at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center where he served on the faculty as an assistant professor of medicine and medical informatics. He is a Fellow of the American College of Physicians (FACP®), and was a National Library of Medicine graduate trainee in medical informatics.

Dr. Bankowitz holds an MD from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine; an MS in Applied Economics from Johns Hopkins University; an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business; and a BS in chemistry/biology from Union College in Schenectady, New York.
